The Color Green

Be praised for all Your tenderness by these works of Your hands. Suns that rise and rains that fall to bless and bring to life Your land. Look down upon this winter wheat and be glad that You have made blue for the sky and the color green that fills these fields with praise – Rich Mullins, The Color Green.

I want you to imagine how much you enjoy the color green. Just close your eyes and imagine green, green leaves, green hills, a green dress, salad greens. After looking at the brown summer hills of El Dorado county, the green is shockingly welcome. And the varieties, shades of green in the plans.

David wrote: “He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul.” (Ps. 23:2-3a)

How about blue? The blue of the sky. The blue of the sea. The blue petals of a flower popping up unexpectedly in a garden. The blue of a popsicle, a shirt.

It is worth pausing, taking leisurely inventory and realizing how much pleasure these simple gifts add to our enjoyment of life. We often neglect these 'ordinary' things that God gives us all .The list  of these gifts could go on. The first bite of a Snickers bar, the cool of water flowing on your skin, the smell of coffee or cinnamon, the sound of bird, a chapel bell or a child’s laughter.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1:17

These are gifts from God. Free of charge. No payment required. Sometimes we are so caught up in the cycle of barter-of payment given for services received-that we fail to receive and enjoy.

“The best way to pay for a lovely moment is to enjoy it." ~ Richard Bach
